Teresa Scalzo
Honoring Legal Champions

This Wall of Tribute was created to honor prosecutors who demonstrate compassion, professionalism, and respect – while pursuing justice on behalf of victims and their families. It is named in honor of Teresa Scalzo, a legal champion who dedicated her life to serving victims and holding offenders accountable.

At the time of her death, Teresa Scalzo served as the Deputy Director of the Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps Trial Counsel Assistance Program (TCAP). Yet she advanced the prosecution of violence against women in countless ways. She provided technical assistance and trial support to thousands of criminal justice professionals, published numerous influential works, and served on a number of national committees dealing with sexual assault and domestic violence.

In 2012, Teresa Scalzo won a Bronze medal in the Maryland Writers Association Great Beginnings Contest for her novel, Silenced Voices. The novel captures the challenges she encountered in court trying to give victims a voice, as well as the experiences of the prosecutors and investigators across the nation to whom she provided training and consultation over the past decade.

In 2009, we awarded Teresa with our highest honor – the Visionary Award:

For her vision, leadership, and dedication to the cause of successfully prosecuting cases of sexual assault, particularly those committed by someone known to the victim and/or facilitated with drugs and alcohol. Teresa's tireless efforts to improve the prosecution of difficult cases have helped us to pursue justice for countless victims and hold more perpetrators accountable.

We invite you to celebrate the life of Teresa Scalzo, and honor the service of legal champions everywhere, by purchasing a brick in our Prosecution Tribute Wall. All the proceeds will be used to fund scholarships in Teresa’s name for prosecutors to attend our annual international conference on sexual assault, domestic violence, and other forms of gender-based violence.
